Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain: Separating Controversy from Consensus (Vol. 46, 2009)
Editors: J.A. McNamara & S.D. Kapila

It has been over twenty years since the so-called “Michigan case,” in which a clinician was accused of causing temporomandibular joint problems in one of his patients. The resultant judgment of one million dollars against the orthodontist rocked the dental profession, putting to rest the popular belief that “dentists do not get sued.” With the increase emphasis on evidence-based dentistry, much has been learned about the etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and orofacial pain since the late 1980s. This 500 page volume provides the collective wisdom of well-known experts from various disciplines to address what is known and what is not concerning contemporary management of temporomandibular and other orofacial pain conditions. The topics considered in the book are wide ranging including orthodontics, occlusion and TMD, psychological factors, hormonal factors, functional factors, and the non-surgical management of TMD conditions. Other issues are tissue engineering, condylar resorption, 3D joint imaging, and the TMD Implant Registry. Contributors include Christian Stohler, Jeffrey Okeson, Linda LeResche, Hans Pancherz, David Hatcher, Charles Carlson, Sunil Kapila, Scott Conley, Charles McNeill, Lucia Cevidanes, and Larry Wolford, plus many other investigators.
