The Masticatory Organ is a 543 page comprehensive textbook with superb illustrations and color photographs. Just introduced in 2002 into the English language, this well known and respected author has created an excellent resource of intrest to both practicing clinicians and residents. Dr. Rudolf Slavicek was the Chairman of Prosthodontics for three decades and later the former dean of the Dental School at the University of Vienna. The author takes us through the evolution of the human masticatory organ including its development prompted by communicative speech in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 details the structures of the cranio-mandibular system, the neuromuscular system-muscles of the masticatory organ, and the occlusion and ontogenesis of the masticatory organ. Chapter 3 outlines the various functions with discussions of mastication, phylogenetic changes, speech, posture, esthetics and their interrelationships to stress management. Chapter 4 is a thorough discussion of diagnostics and clinical function, examination of movement, analysis with instrumental modalities, and instrumental functional analysis. Chapter 5 examines various types of clinical intervention, with symptomatic therapy for acute pain and casual initial therapy of the dysfunctional masticatory organ. Chapter 6, by Dr. Sadao Sato gives a breakdown of the morphological aspects of the individual bones comprising the craniofacial complex and their relation to the articulations of dentition.
